Federal Acts
Civil Rights Act- 1964
After John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Lyndon B. Johnson continued working on the Civil Rights Act that Kennedy had started previously. On July 2nd, 1964, this act was passed, prohibiting racial segregation in employment, education, and all public places.

Voting Rights Act- 1965
In 1965, The Voting Rights Act was passed, banning discrimination in voting practices by federal, state, and local governments. The act has been reauthorized four times, most recently in 2006.

Fair Housing Act- 1968
Four days after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was passed. This act prohibits discrimination by housing providers, banks, and insurance companies. It eventually covered seven protective classes: race, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability, and familial status.
